Maastricht University Medical Centre+
Description
Dr. Floor Heubel-Moenen is an internist-haematologist and haemophilia practitioner at Maastricht University Medical Center+ (MUMC+), an expert centre for Hemophilia, von Willebrand’s disease and Platelet Function Disorders. After completing her PhD on ‘Diagnostics and mechanisms of haemostasis in patients with mild bleeding disorders and thrombocytopenia’ in 2022, she initiated a national research line on bleeding disorders of unknown cause (BDUC), integrating clinical and laboratory research with patients perspectives and health care improvement.
Recognizing the unmet needs in patients with (BDUC), her research focuses on improving bleeding diagnostics and care using innovative haemostasis testing, such as the Maastricht Flowchamber, which she pioneered for BDUC diagnostics. For her leadership in translating innovative diagnostics into clinical practice, she was awarded the Translate2Clinic Fellowship (2023), securing dedicated research time and a PhD position to advance this field.
She is actively involved in education, teaching in the annual transfusion and haemostasis course, clinical chemistry training days, and the NVTH PhD course. She co-supervises several PhD students and bachelor’s and master’s students in their research internships in medicine. Nationally, she contributes to guideline development as chair of the Dutch bleeding evaluation guideline committee, and serves on the editorial board of the Dutch Journal of Hematology.
Internationally, she is an active co-opted member of the ISTH scientific subcommittee on VWF, working on defining BDUC and co-chaired the ISTH SSC meeting on mild bleeding disorders (2024, Bangkok). Additionally, she was an invited speaker at the European Hematology Congress (2024, Madrid), the Åland Island Meeting on von Willebrand Disease (2024), the AHAD-AP Annual Scientific Meeting (Taipei, 2025) and the ISTH SSC joined session on VWF and Women’s Health (2025, Washington). Beyond her research and clinical work, she is engaged in fundraising action for Health Foundation Limburg for the project: ‘bloedtesten door dik en dun’. Her vision centers on collaboration between clinicians, laboratory specialists, fundamental researchers and patients, believing it to be the key to innovation and excellence in care for patients with bleeding disorders.
